Annual award shows quality control’s impact on operational efficiency
Chantilly, Va. -- April 13, 2011 – For the second consecutive year, the winner of Food Engineering magazine’s Plant of the Year award is a company that uses InfinityQS as its global quality control solution. This year Shearer’s Foods, based out of Brewster, OH, is the recipient of the award. Keystone Foods LLC, of Gadsden, AL won the award in 2010.
Shearer’s Foods deployed InfinityQS’ ProFicient™ in 2009 with the goal of creating a single, centralized system capable of collecting, analyzing, and storing critical safety and compliance data. Since then, Shearer’s has extended the reach of the system by integrating ProFicient with their ERP and customized MES systems. The integrated system triggers alerts based on quality or compliance issues and is capable of halting production if there are discrepancies between the ERP schedule and real-time production.
ProFicient has helped Shearer’s replace all paper-based records with electronic documentation, giving them exceptional document control that meets the audit demands of both customers and regulators. As a result, Shearer’s system attained SQF-level three certification in its Massillon, OH plant in two and a half months where timelines of a year or longer are not uncommon.
By automating the documentation of quality data, Shearer’s no longer has to perform “documentation through mostly brute force efforts, including manual audits, paper forms, individual notifications and manual tracking systems,” said Scott Heldreth, senior vice president of operations at Shearer’s.
“Shearer’s Foods understands the high stakes involved with product and food safety. Even more importantly, they know how to leverage technology to produce safe, reliable foods while driving down manufacturing costs,” said Michael A. Lyle, president and CEO of InfinityQS. “We are honored to be such an integral part of their quality system.”
InfinityQS has worked closely with major food and beverage producers to develop tools that support the requirements of the FDA's Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA). The system provides real-time farm-to-fork traceability across an unlimited number of sites and suppliers. InfinityQS will be demonstrating its cloud computing (SaaS) and hybrid quality solutions at the Food Safety Summit in Washington, D.C. on April 19-21.
